About Strength & Risks

Why this IPO looks interesting

Key positives investors may want to consider before applying.

01

Strong parentage and trusted brand equity

Promoted by Canara Bank (51%) and HSBC Insurance (Asia-Pacific) Holdings (26%), the company benefits from the credibility, vast network, and financial expertise of two globally recognised financial institutions. Together, Canara Bank and HSBC India contributed 82.17% of the company’s new business premium as of June 2025. Customer focus has driven its NPS up from 50 in FY23 to 75, while 13th-month persistency ratios improved from 75.33% in FY23 to 84.25% in Q1FY26, which is among the highest gains among bank-led insurers.

02

Multi-channel distribution network

The company operates a diversified distribution model with bancassurance, brokers, and direct sales, ensuring broad market reach and cost efficiency. Its strategic tie-ups with Canara Bank, HSBC, seven regional rural banks, and other partners provide access to 15,700+ branches and 11.7 crore customers nationwide.

03

Diversified product portfolio

The insurer offers 20 individual and 7 group products, and 2 optional rider benefits, covering protection, savings, annuity, and ULIPs. It held the third-highest share of non-linked non-participating premiums and the second-highest average premium size among PSU-led life insurers in FY25. The company’s sum assured grew at a CAGR of 19% from FY23–25. Claims settlement ratio improved to 99.38%, with average settlement time down to 5.33 days in Q1FY26.

What investors should watch closely

Risk factors and possible pressure points around the offer.

01

Heavy dependence on bancassurance partners

92.33% of the company’s new business premium was generated through bancassurance partners, primarily Canara Bank and HSBC India (together accounting for 82.17%) in Q1FY26. Any termination or adverse change in these distribution agreements, valid till June 2033, could materially impact sales growth and profitability. Additionally, increased competition due to IRDAI’s permission for banks to tie up with up to nine life insurers could dilute Canara HSBC’s market share in this channel.

02

Exposure to regulatory volatility

The life insurance sector is subject to frequent regulatory changes. Shifts in solvency, investment, product, or commission regulations could raise compliance costs or restrict certain business models. As of June 30, 2025, the company maintained 17.27% of life funds in housing and infrastructure (above the 15% minimum). However, any increase in mandatory investment limits, solvency thresholds, or expense caps could squeeze margins.

04

Technology-driven operations

The company has heavily invested in automation and digital analytics, with IT expenses forming 1.16% of FY25 revenue, among the highest in its peer group. 87.08% of service requests were handled digitally in FY25, reducing turnaround times for non-financial services to one day.

03

Product concentration in non-participating segment

A significant portion of new business premium arises from non-participating products, which contributed over 18.92% of total new business in Q1FY26. Any regulatory tightening or market shift away from guaranteed-return products could dampen demand and necessitate product redesign, adversely impacting margins.

04

Trademark and brand dependency

The company operates under royalty-free trademark licenses with Canara Bank and HSBC Group Management Services Limited, valid till 2033 and 2031, respectively. Termination or non-renewal of these agreements would compel a rebrand, weakening consumer trust and brand recall built over 15 years.
